Asus Netbook – X101Review:
Asus has reveled its new Eec PC Netbook at the Computex – X101. It is the first ever notebook to be launched with MeeGo as the default operating system. However, it is released with two variants one with Windows 7 operating system and another MeeGo as an operating system.
The Asus Netbook runs on an Intel Atom N435 1.33 GHz processor. It is extremely thin (17.6 mm thinckness) and weighs only 950 g which is a standout feature of this netback. This makes it portable and durable, made of an aluminum shell with polished surfaces. It is similar to 11 inch MacBook Air in many ways, though around 80 percent cheaper.
It comes with 10.1 inch display with 1024*600 resolution and basic features like twin microphone, 1GB RAM, 3 cell battery GMA 600 graphics, 3.5 mm headphone jack, ASUS chic-let keyboard and a 6-cell battery. The X101 is equipped with 2 USB ports, WIFI b/g/n, Bluetooth and a microSD card slot. Users will have an option to replace hard disk with an SSD. The netbook is supported by 2600mAh battery.
The MeeGo version delivers a decent Linux experience. This operating system operates on panels like “People” panel is for social networking and tools like Twitter, Flickr, Facebook and AIM. All the social networks feed into another “Status” panel. The “AsusVibe” panel is for all kinds of media, proprietary application by Asus. The “Internet” panel is for surfing. The Chromium browser is good and responds well. YouTube Clips and websites with flash content can be loaded without any difficulty.
Asus Netbook – X101 Pricing details:
There are no words on availability and pricing. It will arrive in gold, red and white version, although it might roll out in black as well. The MeeGo variant is likely to be shipped with a 16GB SSD, retailing at $200. There will be an option to run Windows 7 on it but with an extra cost.
Asus Netbook – X101 Verdict:
It is a bargain device mostly priced around $200 that keeps this device on the radar. Compared to $500 tablets which have been creating waves, Asus Netbook with both MeeGo and Windows 7 operating system onboard might keep its spot in the market. It is certainly a cheap entry level netback with no out of the box features but high quality.
